Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) Course Options

There are two Nationally recognised qualifications designed specifically for the OSHC sector:

  • 10983NAT Certificate III in Outside School Hours Care – for entry level OSHC educators. If this is you Click Here 
  • CHC50221 Diploma of School Age Education and Care – for those currently working as or seeking to work as an educator responsible for the day-to-day running of an Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) service or vacation care. If this is you, then read on!

Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) is the term commonly given to before and after school care and vacation care programs. OSHC is a growing field of employment with staff in demand!

Jobs that may result from this qualification include: Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) Educator, Team Leader, Education Leader, Supervisor, Coordinator, Program Manager, 2IC, Centre Manager or Director. 

  • Study Mode: study is self paced meaning you can enrol at any time and progress at any speed you like without the stress of due dates and rigid class time tables.
  • Study Method – Choose from:
    • Online: Experience a whole new level of elearning! Our student portal has the perfect balance of visually engaging content and a clean, easy to use platform. Recorded webinars are used to break topics down into small, manageable chunks. 
    • Correspondence: Receive all course materials by post. Resources are hardcopy. Assessments are provided on a USB stick. 
  • Duration: You will have up to 2 years to complete, but being self-paced there is no restriction on how quickly you finish. Study duration depends on the hours you put in and your skill level. As a guide, someone dedicating 8 hours per week to study, could expect to complete the the course in 6 – 12 months.
  • Practical Placement: A minimum of 280 hours in an OSHC setting must be achieved. This may be achieved through a volunteer placement or paid work. You can arrange your own placement or Adapt Education can arrange one near to you.
  • All training, assessment and student services for this course are offered by Adapt Education (RTO# 32452). We do not act as a broker and no aspect of your enrolment will be outsourced to another organisation.


Government Funding

Higher Level Skills Subsidy

Adapt Education is an approved Skills Assure provider funded by the QLD Government to deliver this course.

 

To be eligible for the Higher Level Skills Subsidy, a student must:

  • Be aged 15 years or over and no longer be at school
  • Be a Queensland resident
  • Be an Australian citizen or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident (including humanitarian entrants), or a temporary resident with the necessary visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency).
  • Not hold a Certificate IV or higher level qualification (Does not include qualifications completed at school or abroad or foundation skills training).
  • Not currently be enrolled in another qualification, not including foundation skills training.

Some important points about the Higher Level Skills Subsidy:

  • The course is heavily subsidised, however a small student co-contribution fee is applicable. Concession card holders (health care card or pension concession card) and Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander persons will qualify for the concessional rates indicated. 
  • Students are only eligible for one subsidised training place;

  • Enrolments cannot be accepted from international students or those in Australia on a student or education visa.
  • Additional fees may apply if you are completing the first aid unit as part of your course. Refer to the relevant course outline for further details.

Payment Plans

Payment plans are offered at no additional cost! That’s right, you DO NOT pay more if you opt for a payment plan. No Interest, account, or administration fees. No contracts with external finance companies. You nominate the payment periods (i.e. weekly, fortnightly or monthly). You nominate the amount you are comfortable paying (i.e. $50, $100, $200, etc.). 

Upfront Payments can be made by credit card, bank transfer, cheque, money order or cash.

Course Requirements

  • You will have access to a computer and the internet to complete the assessment requirements of the course. Please discuss with Adapt if this is an issue as strategies can be put in place to assist.
  • You will have well developed Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills. Students who do not meet the minimum LLN requirements for this course will be provided a range of options and strategies to assist.
  • You will have the relevant Working With Children Check for your state or territory (more details below).

First Aid

Apart from being a crucial life skill, having up-to-date First Aid certification can improve your employability. One of the core units in this course is HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting.  You may book into an Adapt Education first aid course or you can complete this unit with any first aid provider in Australia. Simply present your certificate to us on completion and we will credit the unit towards your course.

Important points:

  • The cost of the first aid unit is not included in Adapt Education’s course fee. You will need to pay the listed course fee to your selected first aid provider.
  • Ensure you are booking into a first aid course that includes the nationally recognised unit HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting.

Outcomes

On successful course completion:

  • You will be awarded CHC50221 Diploma of School age education and care.
  • Create pathways to employment or promotion as a qualified Diploma level educator.
  • Create pathways to university. In most States this qualification will enable direct entry into an education degree and may also gain credits
    towards your degree. Check with your preferred university for more information. This program has an articulation arrangement for the Bachelor of Child, Youth and Family Practice with Griffith University. You may receive direct entry and 50CP credit  towards the Bachelor.
