The primary purpose of this course is to provide participants with the tutoring skills and knowledge needed to help others reach a secondary school level of literacy. Those being tutored may include school students, migrants and others, including those serving prison sentences or on parol. 

In this course you will develop an increased awareness and understanding of the role of literacy and the complexities of English. You will also acquire skills in evidence-based reading approaches and in composing texts.

  • Teachers seeking professional development: Teachers have undertaken this course in order to better assist students with Special Needs including those learning English as an Additional Language or Dialect. 
  • Parents who want to support their children’s education and homework will gain confidence and the ability to communicate more effectively with their children and teaching staff. 
  • Community service personnel who provide literacy support to migrants, youth, prison inmates and others requiring literacy support.

  • Full Course or Single Units Available: For those seeking targeted professional development, you can enrol into one or more units of your choice. 
  • Adapt Education, Teacher Aide students may request to replace two elective units from the Teacher Aide course with two elective units from this program.
  • Blended, onsite and classroom study modes may be available on request. Please discuss with an Adapt Education staff member.

Duration

You will have up to 1 year to complete but can progress at any pace. As a guide someone allocating 1 – 2 days per week could expect to complete the course in 14 – 20 weeks. Note: This timeframe can vary significantly depending on an individual’s life and work experience, current knowledge and study habits.

Practical Placement

  • You will be required to log 30 hours tutoring (this may be paid or unpaid work) with a variety of particpants/students as part of your study.
  • The hours can be completed at any stage during your course.
  • Adapt Education can arrange your placement for you or you can arrange your own.

Entry Requirements

You will have access to a computer and the internet to complete the assessment requirements of the course. Please discuss with Adapt if this is an issue as strategies can be put in place to assist. All students will complete a Language Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) test and a phone interview to confirm suitability for this course. As working with children is a part of this course, it is required that students obtain clearance from the relevant authority prior to commencing their practical placement.

Payment Plans

Payment plans are offered at no additional cost! That’s right, you DO NOT pay more if you opt for a payment plan. No Interest, account, or administration fees. No contracts with external finance companies. You nominate the payment periods (i.e. weekly, fortnightly or monthly). You nominate the amount you are comfortable paying (i.e. $50, $100, $200, etc.). Payment plans are processed with our direct debit system.
